A defense industry team led by BAE Systems and Northrop Grumman announced today that, after what executives called a "painful" deliberation and risk assessment, they have presented the Army with their proposal for a hybrid electric Ground Combat Vehicle.

Mark Signorelli, BAE's vice president and general manager for the GCV project team, told reporters at a conference in Washington today that choosing to put forth a bid with a hybrid electric drive system was an exceedingly difficult decision given the military's past reluctance to adopt such solutions.

The Army wants to delay the modernization of its Abrams and Bradley fleets because it has identified the development of the Ground Combat Vehicle as a higher priority, according to a general with knowledge of the service's strategy.
