p> January 20, 1999 Weldon Responds to Administration Announcement on National Missile Defense WASHINGTON, DC -- Congressman Curt Weldon (R-PA), Chairman of the House Armed Service Committee's Research and Development Subcommittee and a vocal proponent for the deployment of a national missile defense system, issued the following statement in response to an announcement today by Secretary of Defense William Cohen and other Clinton Administration officials on the issue of national missile defense.
p>Sen. Carl Levin's Floor Statement on Military Base Closure Bill Jan. 20, 1999 Mr. LEVIN. Mr. President, I am pleased to once again join my colleagues from the Armed Services Committee, Senator McCain and Senator Robb, in introducing this legislation authorizing the Department of Defense to close excess, unneeded military bases. For the past two years, Secretary of Defense Cohen has asked the Congress to authorize two additional base closure rounds. But Congress has not acted.

p>Sen. Charles Robb'a Floor Statement on Base Closure Bill Jan. 20, 1999 Mr. ROBB. Mr. President, last year I joined Senators McCain and Levin in introducing legislation authorizing another base closure round. I argued then, as I do today, that failing to enact another BRAC round only makes the Congress look short-sighted and indecisive. I argued then that if we don't bite the bullet quickly, the cost of excess infrastructure will continue to drag down the readiness of our forces today and rob us of the resources so badly needed to modernize our forces for tomorrow.
