Sept. 12, 2000 -- While U.S. military force size in the Persian Gulf remains steady, the Pentagon will keep a closer eye on Iraq over the next few weeks because, historically, Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has shown a proclivity for military action during the later months of the year, Pentagon spokesman Kenneth Bacon told reporters today. Iraq waged war against Iran in 1980, invaded Kuwait in 1990, began moving military divisions to Kuwait in 1994, and attacked the Kurds in 1996 -- all within the August through October time period, he said.
