Close inspection of the Army strategic planning guidance, released last week, reveals a new tack on what was long considered a no-go area in service circles: specialized units. "The Army will evaluate the benefit of converting modular formations for the task or providing specialized force structure to meet the anticipated requirements for an irregular warfare mission set," states the document. The section is included in a paragraph about Army steps toward streamlining its force structure for security force assistance missions.
