Close inspection of the Army strategic planning guidance,
released last week, reveals a new tack on what was long considered a no-go area
in service circles: specialized units. "The Army will evaluate the benefit of
converting modular formations for the task or providing specialized force
structure to meet the anticipated requirements for an irregular warfare mission
set," states the document. The section is included in a paragraph about Army
steps toward streamlining its force structure for security force assistance
missions. These specialized units would be able to revert to their original
task if needed, the planning guidance states.
