Obama and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey on
Wednesday praised Gen. John Allen, Obama's nominee as the next supreme allied
commander Europe (SACEUR) and commander of U.S. European Command, and Marine
Corps Assistant Commandant Gen. Joseph Dunford, the president's nominee to
suceed Allen as the next top U.S. commander in Afghanistan. Obama also thanked
Adm. Jim Stavridis, who Allen would succeed in the spring, assuming the Senate
confirms him. Dunford's nomination is also subject to Senate confirmation.
